Rodent Control in Westchester County: Mice & Rats in Older Homes

Westchester County is one of the most desirable places to live in New York — tree-lined streets, charming older neighborhoods, and easy access to New York City. But the same older housing stock that gives Yonkers, Tarrytown, and Ossining their character also creates ideal conditions for rodent infestations. If you live in a pre-1960 colonial or Tudor with a fieldstone foundation, you may be unknowingly hosting mice or rats.

Why Older Westchester Homes Are More Vulnerable

Fieldstone foundations — common in homes built before 1960 — are notoriously difficult to seal completely. The irregular gaps between stones provide dozens of potential entry points for mice, which can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime. In neighborhoods like Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, and Sleepy Hollow, we regularly find mice entering through gaps where utility pipes pass through stone foundations.

Attics in older White Plains and New Rochelle homes are another hotspot. Mice nest in blown-in insulation, shredding it for bedding material and contaminating it with droppings. Rats, which are more common in densely populated areas like Yonkers and Mount Vernon, tend to burrow under concrete slabs and enter through sewer lines.

Mouse vs. Rat: How to Tell the Difference

  • House mice are small (3–4 inches), grey-brown, with large ears and a pointed nose. They leave tiny dark droppings (about the size of a grain of rice) and are active at night.
  • Norway rats are large (7–10 inches), brown-grey, with blunt noses. Their droppings are much larger — about ¾ inch long. Rats are bolder and more destructive, capable of gnawing through wood beams, PVC pipe, and even soft concrete.

Both species reproduce rapidly. A single female mouse can produce 6–8 litters per year with up to 12 pups each. By the time you notice signs of mice, an infestation is already well established.

Common Signs of Rodents in Westchester Homes

  • Droppings along baseboards, in kitchen cabinets, or in attics
  • Chewed food packaging, wires, or structural wood
  • Scratching sounds inside walls at night
  • Grease marks along walls (from rats' oily fur)
  • Nesting materials (shredded paper, insulation, fabric)

Why DIY Rodent Control Fails

Hardware store snap traps and bait stations can catch individual rodents, but they rarely eliminate an infestation. Common DIY mistakes include:

  • Misplacing traps — mice follow walls, so traps placed in the middle of a room are rarely triggered
  • Using the wrong bait — peanut butter works, but mice quickly learn to avoid certain baits
  • Missing entry points — without sealing gaps, new rodents move in as fast as you catch others
  • Bait station risks — improper placement of rodenticide poses dangers to children, pets, and non-target wildlife
