Mosquito Control in the Bronx: Pelham Bay Park and Urban Breeding Grounds

Mosquito Control in the Bronx: Pelham Bay Park and Urban Breeding Grounds

The Bronx has some of the most significant mosquito breeding habitat in the entire metropolitan area — generated by its largest natural parks and urban waterways.

Pelham Bay Park: The Bronx's Biggest Mosquito Source

Pelham Bay Park — the largest park in New York City — features salt marshes, freshwater wetlands, and tidal inlets that create exceptional mosquito breeding habitat from May through October. The park's wetlands support large populations of salt marsh mosquitoes and the common house mosquito (Culex pipiens), the primary vector for West Nile virus.

Residents in Pelham Bay, Eastchester, Throgs Neck, and Morris Park experience some of the highest mosquito pressure in New York City.

Van Cortlandt Park and the Bronx River Corridor

Van Cortlandt Park in the northwest Bronx contains Van Cortlandt Lake and swampy areas that affect Riverdale, Woodlawn, and Norwood residents. The Bronx River corridor through Soundview and near the Bronx Zoo also generates mosquito pressure in adjacent neighborhoods.

West Nile Virus Monitoring in the Bronx

NYC's Department of Health conducts annual West Nile virus monitoring throughout the five boroughs. The Bronx — with its significant wetland habitats — has been one of the boroughs where West Nile is regularly detected in mosquito surveillance pools each season. Reducing local mosquito populations through professional treatment is a meaningful public health measure for vulnerable residents.

Urban Mosquito Breeding Sites in the Bronx

  • Neglected catch basins — storm drain catch basins with standing water are a primary Culex breeding site
  • Clogged gutters on residential and commercial buildings throughout Eastchester, Pelham Bay, and Riverdale
  • Flat roof drains on commercial buildings that pool water after rain
  • Neglected above-ground swimming pools — an unmaintained pool produces thousands of mosquitoes per week
  • Planters, flowerpot saucers, and bird baths — overlooked small standing water sources

Professional Mosquito Control for Bronx Properties

Hello Pest Control's barrier spray program targets leaf surfaces, shrubs, hedges, and shaded vegetation where adult mosquitoes rest during daylight hours. Our EPA-registered treatments provide 3–4 weeks of residual protection and are safe for people and pets once dry. Our seasonal program runs from late April through October.

For Bronx properties with standing water on-site, we also offer larvicide treatment to prevent mosquitoes from completing their lifecycle on your property.

One-Time Event Treatments

Hello Pest Control also provides one-time mosquito treatments for outdoor events on Bronx properties. A single treatment 24–48 hours before your event provides protection throughout the gathering.
