Stink Bugs and Fall Invaders in the Bronx: What's Getting Into Your Home

Stink Bugs and Fall Invaders in the Bronx: What's Getting Into Your Home

Stink Bugs and Fall Invaders in the Bronx: What's Getting Into Your Home

Every September and October, as temperatures cool in the Bronx, a predictable parade of fall invaders starts appearing on interior walls — particularly in neighborhoods with tree cover and older buildings. Brown marmorated stink bugs, boxelder bugs, and cluster flies all share the same strategy: getting inside before winter hits and waiting it out until spring.

Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs in the Bronx

Brown marmorated stink bugs (Halyomorpha halys) are well established throughout the Northeast. In the Bronx, they're most noticeable in neighborhoods with tree cover — Riverdale, Fieldston, Pelham Bay, and Baychester. Stink bugs are harmless to humans and structures but can be present in the hundreds or thousands inside wall voids and attic spaces.

They're attracted to sun-warmed walls and enter through gaps around window and door frames. In Norwood and Fieldston, older brick and frame buildings with deteriorated caulking are particularly vulnerable.

What not to do:

  • Do not crush them — crushing releases the defensive chemical odor
  • Do not use indoor foggers — ineffective against bugs in wall voids
  • Do not use a standard vacuum — the odor transfers to the bag

What works: Use a vacuum with a bag disposed of outdoors immediately. Seal exterior entry points in late summer. Schedule professional perimeter treatment in August–September.

Boxelder Bugs in the Bronx

Boxelder bugs are black insects with red-orange wing markings that feed on boxelder trees, silver maples, and ash trees — all present in Bronx parks and street tree plantings, particularly in Riverdale, Pelham Bay, and around Van Cortlandt Park. They congregate in enormous numbers on sun-warmed south-facing walls before working their way inside through gaps in fall.

Boxelder bugs don't bite, don't breed indoors, and don't damage structures. Prevention is the best approach: caulk gaps around windows and seal door thresholds before mid-September.

Cluster Flies in the Bronx

Cluster flies are larger than house flies and move sluggishly. Unlike house flies, they don't breed indoors and are not associated with filth. They overwinter in wall voids and attic spaces and appear on warm winter days through ceiling fixtures and upper-room outlets. They're most common in Riverdale, Fieldston, Baychester, and other neighborhoods with maintained yards where earthworm populations are high.

Professional Treatment for Fall Invaders

For all three fall invaders, the professional approach is the same: exterior perimeter treatment in late August through September, before insects begin actively seeking overwintering sites. This preventive treatment is far more effective than addressing bugs already inside wall voids.

Hello Pest Control provides fall perimeter treatment throughout the Bronx, including Riverdale, Fieldston, Pelham Bay, Baychester, and Norwood, as well as exclusion services to seal gaps that allow overwintering pests entry.
