Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants excavate wood to create nesting galleries but do not consume it as food, a key difference from termites. While termites digest cellulose using specialized gut microbes, carpenter ants simply remove wood to hollow out space for colonies. They prefer wood already softened by moisture or fungal decay, creating smooth tunnels free of debris. Carpenter ants feed on proteins, sweets, and honeydew from aphids rather than wood fiber. Colonies consist of a parent nest typically in outdoor stumps or logs and satellite nests that may establish inside structures where moisture has compromised wood. Workers travel up to one hundred feet between nests and food sources, following chemical trails. Frass piles beneath excavation sites contain coarse wood shavings mixed with insect parts, distinguishing them from termite droppings. Winged swarmers emerge in spring as reproductives leave to establish new colonies. Signs include rustling sounds in walls at night and trails of workers along foundations or tree branches.
Ticks
Ticks are parasitic arachnids requiring blood meals at each of three life stages: larva, nymph, and adult. After hatching from eggs laid in soil, six-legged larvae climb vegetation to quest for a first host, typically a small mammal or bird. Larvae feed for several days, then drop to the ground and molt into eight-legged nymphs. Nymphs quest for a second host, feed, drop off, and molt into adults. Adult ticks find a third host for feeding and reproduction; females engorge with blood and drop to lay thousands of eggs before dying. This three-host life cycle takes two years or longer depending on species and conditions. Blacklegged ticks transmit Lyme disease and other pathogens primarily during the nymphal stage in late spring and early summer when tiny nymphs are difficult to detect. American dog ticks are larger and more easily noticed. Ticks cannot jump or fly; they quest by climbing grass and brush, extending front legs to grasp passing animals. They require humidity and die in dry conditions, concentrating in leaf litter, tall grass, wooded edges, and shaded groundcover.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are nocturnal insects spending daylight hours hidden in cracks, crevices, and voids near moisture. They avoid light and occupy tight spaces that provide darkness, humidity, warmth, and proximity to food and water. During the day, German cockroaches hide behind appliances, inside cabinet hinges, beneath sinks, within wall voids around plumbing, inside electrical outlets, and in narrow gaps between surfaces. American cockroaches prefer basements, crawl spaces, sewer connections, and utility rooms with high humidity. At night they emerge to forage, traveling along edges and using antennae to navigate and locate food. Cockroaches feed on starches, grease, fermenting matter, and organic debris but can survive weeks without food if water is available. They contaminate surfaces with bacteria carried from sewers and drains, posing health risks. Signs of infestation include droppings resembling pepper or coffee grounds, shed skins, egg cases, musty odor, and smear marks along travel routes. Seeing cockroaches during daytime suggests a large population forcing individuals out of crowded harborage.
Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are nocturnal feeders attracted to sleepers by carbon dioxide exhalation and body heat. They emerge from hiding spots when they detect the CO2 plume exhaled during sleep, following the concentration gradient toward the source. Body warmth radiating from exposed skin further guides them to feeding sites. A bed bug pierces skin with specialized mouthparts containing two tubes: one injects saliva with anticoagulants and anesthetics, the other withdraws blood. Feeding lasts five to ten minutes as the bug engorges, swelling to several times its unfed size. The anesthetic in saliva prevents most people from feeling the bite during feeding. After feeding, bed bugs retreat to nearby hiding spots in mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, headboards, baseboards, furniture crevices, outlets, and clutter. They digest blood meals over several days before seeking another feeding. Adults can survive months without feeding but typically feed every five to ten days when hosts are present. Bed bugs do not live on people but remain in proximity to sleeping areas, emerging only to feed.
Mice
Mice build nests by shredding insulation, paper, fabric, cardboard, and other fibrous materials into fine strips. They gather this material into ball-shaped nests six to eight inches in diameter, constructed in hidden locations that provide warmth, darkness, and protection. Common nesting sites include wall voids, attic insulation, storage boxes, drawers, appliance cavities, and undisturbed spaces. Female mice line nests with softer materials to create bedding for litters. Mice reproduce rapidly; females produce five to ten litters yearly with five to six pups per litter under favorable indoor conditions. Pups are born hairless and helpless but mature in three weeks and begin reproducing at six weeks of age. Signs of nesting activity include shredded material, droppings concentrated in nest areas, greasy rub marks along travel routes, and scratching or squeaking sounds in walls. Mice gnaw constantly to wear down continuously growing incisors, damaging insulation, wiring, wood, plastic, and other materials. They contaminate stored items with urine, droppings, and hair. Nests in wall insulation reduce energy efficiency and create fire hazards when built near wiring.
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes locate hosts by detecting carbon dioxide exhalation and body heat from distances exceeding one hundred feet. CO2 from breathing spreads downwind in a plume, and mosquitoes detect concentration changes through specialized sensory organs. They fly upwind through the gradient toward higher CO2 levels, following the trail to its source. As they approach within several feet, thermal receptors detect body heat radiating from exposed skin, allowing precise targeting of landing sites. Additional chemical cues including lactic acid, ammonia, and other compounds in human sweat provide supplementary guidance. This combination of CO2, heat, and chemical detection enables mosquitoes to find hosts across yards and through vegetation. Different species show varying sensitivity to these cues and prefer different hosts. Female mosquitoes require blood meals to develop eggs; males feed only on nectar. After feeding, females rest in vegetation to digest blood and develop eggs, then seek standing water to lay them. Larvae develop through four aquatic stages in seven to fourteen days, pupate, and emerge as adults to repeat the cycle. Adult mosquitoes rest in dense vegetation, tall grass, and shaded areas during heat of day, becoming active during dawn and dusk when temperatures moderate and humidity rises.
