Haverstraw's downtown streets — Broad Street, Main Street, and the blocks between Minisceongo Creek and the Hudson River shoreline — feature some of the oldest residential and commercial buildings in Rockland County. The Minisceongo Creek corridor and the low-lying wetland areas near Grassy Point Road and Samsondale Avenue create intense mosquito breeding habitat from May through September. Standing water in storm drains and low-lying yards along the Route 9W corridor sustains high mosquito populations well into fall.
