Tappan occupies a quiet stretch of southern Orangetown along Route 303 near the New Jersey border, and its residential character reflects several distinct eras: original farmhouses and colonials along Old Tappan Road and Kings Highway from the 1700s–1800s, post-war ranchers and Capes from the 1940s–1960s, and some later 1970s–1980s construction along Mountainview Avenue. The oldest homes in particular — especially those with original wood framing, fieldstone foundations, and unimproved crawl spaces — are at significant risk for subterranean termites and carpenter ants. The combination of mature oak and maple canopy, aging structural wood, and New Jersey's active termite belt just south of the border means annual termite inspections are important for Tappan homeowners.

Rodent pressure in Tappan runs moderate to high, particularly in homes adjacent to the farm fields and wooded edges along Western Highway and Old Tappan Road. Mice enter through foundation gaps in fall, and rats are occasionally found near compost piles and bird feeders in the wooded residential back yards. Tick activity is present from April through November in yards bordering the wooded lots and hedgerows off Route 303. Stink bugs are a consistent fall nuisance, making their way into wall voids and attics through gaps in the older siding and rooflines common throughout the hamlet. Wildlife, including skunks, raccoons, and groundhogs, are regular visitors to Tappan's larger wooded lots.
