Fordham Road ranks among New York City's busiest commercial corridors, generating enormous volumes of food waste that sustain thriving rat and mouse populations throughout the neighborhood. Ants become a nuisance in ground-floor and basement-level units throughout spring and early summer, particularly in buildings along East Tremont Avenue and the Botanical Garden perimeter.
