This concentration of food creates extraordinary rodent populations in the surrounding infrastructure, with rats and mice present year-round in and around the market complex, its loading docks, parking areas, and the streets surrounding it including Hunt's Point Avenue, Garrison Avenue, and the Bruckner Expressway service road.

These rodents migrate from the commercial zone into the residential neighborhoods of Hunts Point — the apartment buildings and row houses along Spofford Avenue, Tiffany Street, and Bryant Avenue — particularly during colder months and periods of construction or infrastructure disruption near the market. Cockroach infestations are severe in any food-adjacent facility, from market warehouses to the corner bodegas serving the residential community. German cockroaches spread aggressively through shared walls in the neighborhood's older apartment buildings. Fly pressure is significant near the food market during warm weather. Mosquitoes breed along the Bronx River waterfront in summer.
