Piermont's charm comes from its Hudson River setting — the Piermont Pier stretching out into Tappan Zee, the wetland marsh surrounding it, and the steep wooded hillside that rises from the village streets up toward the Palisades. This setting is breathtaking, but it creates intense pest pressure. The Hudson River wetland and tidal marsh adjacent to the pier are among the most productive mosquito breeding habitats in Rockland County. Mosquito activity begins in May and can persist through October, making outdoor dining on Piermont Avenue and Piermont's beloved backyards difficult to enjoy without seasonal barrier treatments.

Piermont's Victorian and craftsman cottages — many built in the late 1800s and early 1920s — have aged wood framing, stone foundations, and crawl spaces that support carpenter ants, subterranean termites, and mice. The waterfront location and proximity to Piermont Creek and the Hudson River sustain a year-round rodent population; rats and mice in Piermont are often introduced via waterfront boat storage, restaurant dumpsters along Piermont Avenue, and the shoreline underbrush. Wildlife — particularly raccoons, opossums, and skunks — descend regularly from the steep wooded hillside above Ferdon Avenue and Paradise Avenue into residential properties below. Tick pressure is also notable along the wooded hillside lots and in the brushy edges near the Sparkill Creek confluence.
